A friend of mine brought over his x800 ATI Radeon. He said it was a good card, but the fan made a horrible grinding sound. I tried to run the card without the fan, and it was running dangerously hot.
So we took apart the entire fan assembly and applied some 10W-30 motor oil onto all of the interior compression rings and springs, also along the base of the spindle. We put it back together, and now the thing purrs like a kitten. It isn't a task for the faint of heart, but the card performs as well as it was originally intended. (for example, I can play Roller Coaster Tycoon 3 with very high graphics settings and no lag)
Just one possible solution for those fellow techs who like to salvage a good older system...
Thanks!
