I actually just bought that eVGA 6600GT from newegg with 20$ rebate.

I upgraded from a ti4200 leadtek. I did see a nice amount of increase. But the reason it wasn't huge was because i oc'd my ti4200 alot and it was running extremely well. This 6600GT is now overclocked to 565/1005 and it's running CS 1.6 at around 71FPS and there was a really nice amount of graphics improvement. and also in Source.

I'd say this was the best bang for buck for ME. Since it's cheap and it's what i can get for AGP. No point to buy a higher AGP because i plan on building a new setup end of 06. and i plan on getting top of the line in everything.

In your shoes, I'd probably be tempted to go for the Sapphire X800 - check out the specs on the card - it'd most likely be o/c'ed above the other comparative X800 offerings (Sapphire tend to speed their cards up a bit). Also take into account that the card offers 256MB DDR3 & is a 256-bit card. The card only has 8 pipelines however...

For $193, my money would go to this bad boy right here:
Sapphire X800GTO
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16814102608

Same specs as the X800GT, but with 12 Pixel pipelines... an absolute steal at the price. (And there you have your X800GT / X800GTO question answered as well!)

Also, if you check out the recent AGP review on Tomshardware - gives you a good idea of what's out there in the AGP sector.

http://www.tomshardware.com/2005/07/05/vga_charts_vii/page6.html

I got myself a 6600GT a few months ago, but after looking at those charts, I'm seriously beginning to think I should've gone the 6800 Ultra / X800GTO route. Oh well, we live, we learn. Now to find some sucka to buy my 6600GT off me... :p

Granted - the 6800GS looks to be a strong card, but I'm sure you'll agree that we're still waiting for the AGP version, and have for a while now...
It also runs 12 pipelines, same as the X800GTO.

I think the X800GTO is a known quantity though, and has received some pretty good reviews from existing owners on NewEgg...

I guess at this point it boils down to whichever brand you prefer - and of course whether you'd be willing to wait for an AGP 6800GS.

thakyou very much for your reply
now i have a clear view over the agp sector of the vidoe cards

the best card now ig the x800GTO ... but in newegg is out of stock :(
i have to decide myself now
6800gs or x800gto ... it looks like i have to wait for both afterall

maybe since i have to wait anyway, i should wait to upgrade to pcie also :)

In the benchmarks I've seen the 6600GT and the plain 6800 perform relatively closely with the 6800 pulling away as you crank up the settings... probably due to its higher memory bandwidth thanks to the 256-bit memory bus. Realistically however, by the time the difference becomes large the framerate is already below playable levels. The 6600gt is slower though, but for the dollar difference I think this would be my top pick budget card.

Edit: I usually look at Pricegrabber.com to find the retailer with the best price.

.

try this in cs 1.6 console

fps_max 101

fps_max 72 is the default so you should see a max of 71... something.
after all 72fps in cs 1.6 is really not good.it's a 6 year old game.

i would buy this GECUBE ATI X800 GTO 256 MB
its 400/1000mhz and has really nice fps in many games
