Landing Lights

Hi all,

I've made a come-back to Flight Simming and really am still a novice. I can
fly some planes, navigate (using the built in map), respond to ATC, and even
land (cough) sometimes.

At the moment I've not much idea about NDB's, VOR's etc. etc. but am reading
up on these courtesy of a great website:-
http://www.navfltsm.addr.com/index.htm

Naturally I have loads of questions, but the first one relates to FS9
itself. Why are there no approach landing lights modelled? There must be a
good reason for it but I cannot think of it. Perhaps some kind soul will
enlighten me, please.

Which airport are you using? I have found approach landing lights at just
about every airport I fly to.

Unless I'm doing something spectacularly wrong (asnd I would'nt be too
surprised if I was), I don't see any at ANY airport.

By runway approach lights, I mean those in this sort of pattern, in line
with the runway:-

x
x
x
x
x
x

I think you get my drift :)

I can see the lights actually on the runway, and the glide slope lights (at
least, that's what I presume they are - the red/white ones).

Dave,
Here in the US that type of runway lighting is called MALSR and MALSF
(Medium intensity Approach Lighting System, with Runway alignment indicator
lights, and Medium intensity Approach Lighting System, with sequenced
Flashing lights) Whew! I'm not sure what they call these in the UK. Not all
airports have MALSR & MALSF, and of the ones that do, not all runways at
these airports are equipped with this type of lighting. I'm not sure why you
are not seeing this, but I know for a fact that my local airport (KBOI) does
have these lighting systems in real life and in FS2004, but only on runways
28L and 10R (which are the designated ILS runways). Try a flight into this
airport (Boise Air Terminal/Gowen Field - KBOI) using either runway 28L or
10R and see if you notice them.
The glideslope lights have several different names, depending on how
they work. One of the most common types is called VASI (Visual Approach
Slope Indicators), these have the red and white lights. Another popular type
is called PAPI (Precision Approach Path Indicators). Hope this helps...

Thanks Randy - a very helpful answer.

Did indeed fly into KBOI (10R) and saw the lights I'd been missing.
Thanks also for the full explanation.

Cheers mate.

At Sydney YSSY, runway 16L and 16R have these lights, but in real life they
only turn them on when visibility is below about 5nm.
