i have a new abit kt7a mobo and amd athon 1.2ghz 266fsb chip.

the system doesn't work. The beep code that I get (5 or 6 secs of continous beeping followed by complete shutdown) means either faulty or wrongly installed processor.

I am almost certain that the chip is installed correctly. I follwed the instructions in both the chip and mobo manuals. I double checked.

So its a bad CPU, correct? Not the motherboards problem? Thoughts?

you get beeps like that when (for one thing) you don't have the memory seated properly. when the CPU is faulty you don't get any beeps at all, it just doesn't POST. (sits there with fans running and nothing happens). There is only one way to install the processor anyways, the way the pins are arranged you can't put it in any other way.

well, i have memory that i know works. I have tried multiple dimms in each of the places, pressed in securely - no change.

And according to the abit kt7 faq, the beep that i get (prolonged beep powered by complete shutdown and fans stop spinning) is due to faulty/improperly installed/missing CPU.

As for not "posting", not sure what that means, but i get no video during the entire time.

And i know there is only one way to install the processor, but i double checked to make sure the pins weren't bent or anything - thats why i think the CPU is bad.

Anything else that I'm possibly missing?

Oh yes, I forgot you are on the ABit board. I have an ASUS board, things are different. I guess if the book tells you it's the CPU, then it must be the CPU.

Why don't you try pulling your CPU out and see if you get the same error code, eh?
