i've been seeing people use this term for a while now.

at first i thought it was a term that AMD fans use to denigrate Intel users. since some Intel chips tend to run a little hot, they need that extra sometimes noisy fan.

then in another thread, i saw the term "AMD fanboys".

so i guess i'm a computer fanboy, or fanman, or fanperson. i recently bought an Opteron 175 ... and i still have my Pentium Pro (it's a beautiful piece of technology - how could i throw it away ?) (in case i ever get a strong desire to look at NT 4, it's there).

actually, i still have a 486 non-VESA-local-bus that i paid $556 for. and i paid $335 for the 120 MB Maxtor to go with it. wish i could use those memory cells for something more recent. maybe senility will take care of that.

anyway, back to the subject - are there 2 meanings to the term "fan-boy" ? (derogatory term that AMD afficionadoes use for Intel users + general term, for example i'm a Claire Forlani fan-boy)

or is it just sort of a general term, like, Sierra Mist fan-boy, Mug Root Beer fan-boy, etc. ?

It is not used just by AMD "fanboys." A Zealot, fanatic, blind follower call it whatever you want it basically an illinformed individual that will only buy from one company and do everything in their power to discredit the opposing company. See: MadModMike, Ycon.

Pal, you just won the most focked up thread of the week award (which is no small feat given that DVDPiddles has been champion in this area for the last 9 weeks straight); I'm semi-illiterate when it comes to computers so I wont be too ungracious in calling you out on this one. That said, I'd be most helpful to give you the real definition of a fanboy, it is:

Fanboy: Some twirp-like teenager: - typically slightly retarded when it comes to both his mental and physical faculties; often found to be ferociously aggressive when it comes to meaningless cpu debates; a nerd's nerd; the school's resident voyeur, with a porn collection to rival www.americanthumpers.com; a typical freak, one who delights in his DVD collection of 90s Japanese Anime.

place i once worked a few of the guys were nicknamed "monkey-boy".

it was sort of a combination insult/ term of endearment, since the only one who could get away calling them that was their buddies.

of course, that was an R&D lab with about 500 engineers - so maybe we were ALL fan-boys.

not sure if i'm gonna put that on my resume.

But yet our new friend brings up an interesting point, and I for one and wont to discuss it. . .

Fanboy: think about it. If I was a marketing type of Zalmaan, coud I say real fans for real boys? No. Maybe not. Then again, one could also contemplate the peon tasked to fanning their despotic ruler during the heat of the day. . . an actual fanboy. Perhaps "fanboy" is not a portmanteau or the like. . .

That sentence, in your punctuation and capitilisation-free style, makes absolutely no fucking sense whatsoever. A bit like your very existance really.
