opteron is $150, and the A64 is $130.

My purpose is to build a system for Photoshop CS2.

My plan is to buy a low cost 939 now.....and in a year pick up a dual core 939, at a reasonable price.

From the specs, the main difference that i can tell is the L2 cache.....1mb vs 512kb.

1. Has anyone seen a head to head comparison, or have any experience comparing single core, identically clocked opterons vs athlons?

2. How significant is having 1mb cache over 512kb.

Thanks!!

The Opteron is a better chip, runs cooler, slightly lower voltage, and overclocks higher, to name a few things.
Plus, it has 1meg cache, that alone is worth $20

he's very right. Theres alot of overclocking going on in both the single core and dual core opteron markets. They commonly hit 2.8 or more ghz on air (sometimes with facotry cooler!) in single core and about 2.6 in dual core. The duals can do 2.7 often but need series are cooling.

Do a google for opteron 146 overclocking or opteron 165 (dual core 1.8/1MB)
