Hi All,

I'm looking to upgrade soon and want to know if its going to be a worthy improvement.

My current system is as follows:

Windows XP Pro SP2
P4 3.06 HT 800 FSB
1024 PC2700 RAM
MAXTOR 80GB 7200RPM
AGP X850 XT PE
(Its a dell so not sure of MOBO)

3DMARK05 Score: 3628

The new system will hopefully be as follows:

Antex 180 Case
DFI Lan Party Ultra-D
AMD 64 4000+ (Socket 939 1mbit l2 cache)
OCZ 2 x 1 Gb EL DDR PC-3200 Dual Channel Platinum
WD 74gb Raptor 10,000 rpm
eVGA GeForce 7800 GT
PSU SeaSonic 500W s12

The system will be mainly used for Games and a little Office work.

Many Thanks

Adam

Today Gaming is all about the Graphics card. I would pick a 7800GTX or X1800XT, cheaper RAM (2x1GB Corsair Value or something). And a cheaper CPU (AMD64s are so easy to OC anyway). An Asus A8R-MVP is a good and probably cheaper motherboard. Anandtech has a review...

Your system seems to be pretty decent as it is for todays standards for the time, might be worth the ~6 month wait to see how good intel's next generation conroe is and what AMD has to to match it.

Otherwise that AMD system would be the way to go.

At least you have your priorities right.

I agree with Apache man. Your system is good enough by todays standards. I bet there are alot of people here on these forums that would kill for your setup. I dont think conroe is going to be worth the wait and I think that M2 will be a rehash of 939 for at least another year. All you need to do is wait for a really good, really cheap Pci-e GPU. I say stay where you are for now.

You'd probably be better served by tweaking the system you have. It is still a good rig, but it's being choked by bloatware. Read this article

Im just waiting to see what happens with Conroe - either way it will put more pressure on AMD then the current "solution" the P4.

Thank you.

I re-ran the 3dmark05 and got a score of 5251 after a fresh boot so I think that heat is also an issue.

I think I'm going to re-case this system and add a better cpu cooler.

That looks like a pretty nice configuration for gaming! I think you'll see a significant difference.

I just bought a x850xt because i didn't have the money to buy a 7800GT so I'm just going to end up overclocking it until I can afford a better graphics card, so I would not be complaining if I were you.

I didn't here any complaining...

First of all you don't have a 3.06 with an 800 FSB. So if you don't even know what your CPU is, I don't think any of us can give you a good answer.
