The Asus A8N5X motherboard is stated to support dual channel RAM.

Does this mean that you have to use dual channel RAM or can you use non-dual channel RAM instead?

'Dual Channel RAM' and 'Non Dual Channel RAM' are actually the same thing. When you see a package of RAM that is marked 'Dual Channel' it is just a marketing term. It means that the 2 sticks are identical, which guarantees that they will work in dual channel mode.

So you do not have to buy RAM that says 'Dual Channel' on the package.
