I don't know if there is such a thing as a cheap motherboard running a dual core processor. From what I've read, it sounds like if your getting a dual core Intel CPU, its most compatible with the 955x chipset. Those boards run for around $180-$200.

Motherboard: ~$190
average to below average grade 19" LCD monitor: ~$250
1GB RAM: ~$75
Cheap Case: ~$60
Dual Core Intel CPU 2.8Ghz: ~$240
Total: $815

The rest of the components would be on-board like the video, sound, and network connectors. You can probably adjust the CPU speed based on your budget.

If you plan on using your old 160GB drive, make sure the board still has at least one IDE connector. Most are SATA.

I estimated the prices from http://www.newegg.com

An AMD solution is another alternative

X23800+ $322

ASRock 939Dua-SATAII mobo $70

1gb(2x512mb) Corsair VS $76

Albatron 6600LE 256MB GPU $83 because the mobo doesn't have onboard video. You can get cheaper video than this but 6600LE is pretty much a low end card

Case $60-pick a case with "good" included PSU

Monitor $250

$859-not that much more expensive

It depends where you are located? I'm in Toronto Canada and there are a few really cheap places to get parts.

is tigerdirect.ca cheap on canada?

Oh, i think the x2 3800+ smokes the Pentium D 820-840EE on almost every test according to THG chart, just something to consider.
