I just rephrased the subject when I realised it could be mistaken for
spam.


I have an HP Deskjet 895CXI printer. To replace the b/w and colour
inks will cost only about £10 less than a brand new budget printer.

I'm unhappy that there are no drivers to support double sided
printing in Windows XP for it but otherwise it works fine and I'm
happy with it.

Does it make sense to pay £10 - £20 more and get a new printer
(presumably with new ink cartridges) or buy new ink?

Try Fineprint Software driver
it can do 2 sided printing www.fineprint.com

Try downloading and installing the driver for the 990Cxi.

Refill those carts. I have an 895cxi and the carts are easy to refill and
there is no need for a chip resetter.

I looked into the budget printers, and the cartridges are indeed much
smaller. I noticed that although new cartridges are several £'s
cheaper than the 895cxi ones - they only hold 8 ml whereas the 895cxi
hods 30ml !

I decided to stick with the 895cxi.

I replied to one of the other threads on this topic, but I believe the home
version of the DeskJet 840 driver from
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc [...] m=dj1164en
will meet your needs. I do not have an 895 here anymore, but did download and
install this driver and checked the options, it does provide a double sided
option.

They often don't. In fact that was one of the reasons why we changed
from HP printers. After having a printer working in NT, then changing
to 2000 and finding HP wouldn't write a driver and having to buy a new
printer then changing from 2000 to XP and finding the new printer also
wouldn't have a driver written by HP and that the 2000 driver wouldn't
work... We decided enough was enough. Which is a shame as they are
good workhorses and were our standard (not photo) printers.

Many thanks Bob. I installed the 840 drivers and I now have fully
functional duplex printing (which I really missed) I also have other
advanced features and a proper toolbox plus a HP print preview which I
didn't have before.

I didn't allow the toolbox to run at startup. It's not needed.
