Is it just me or do anybody else think that Harry Potter movie (and character and books) is a major crap?

I haven't read the books, not going to either. I saw the movie though and thought it was very well done. I liked it, but could feel the length of it. I'd still recommend it though.

On the other hand I have read the Tolkien books and am going insane waiting to see The Fellowship of the Ring. That movie will put Harry Pooper to shame. The reviews are starting to roll in already (check rottentomatoes.com) and it sounds and looks amazing. They originally were going to go so diehard that there would only be 2 - 4.5 hour films. Now there are 3 -3 hour ones though.

The difference is that kids can read Harry Potter but have a hard time reading Tolkiens work. I can understand that, but it's the reason why Harry Potter is so popular: Kids just haven't read LOTR and don't know the difference.

The problem is that Harry Potter is so popular because adults read it too, not because of the kids!

And here i thought little mister Tolkien wrote LOTR for kids!?
Getting its way to being a major reading subject in college just shows the quality of the work!

What really pisses me off is that many people that don´t read much books or don´t read books at all, suddenly get to read Harry Potter´s books and think its something so good they start calling it a master piece!

I liked Harry Potter.

Granted, it's just another fairy tale. If you've read/watched one, you've seen every single last one of them. The names have been changed to protect the innocent minds, but it's the same ole' story.

I'd recommend Harry Potter to anyone that likes Disney Movies. It's definately worth watching once, unlike Final Fantasy...

I hate Harry Potter. It's pure junk. I liek more serious stuff. Lord of the Rings series (when I read it in 6th grade) was good. Just read Rainbow 6- excellent.

I don't know.
I have not read the books nor have I seen the movie. I do not plan on it in the future.
When something comes out and it becomes a fad I tend to avoid it just because I don't want to give in.
Too many bad experiences from fads and trends.

I have read, to my 8yr old daugher, all of the HP books, several times. I enjoy them, masterpiece? bit early for that but they are well told stories with some very good characters. The novel part is the way she ties together the books and builds characters through out the series. I am looking forward to the next book.

I was not all that impressed with the movie, to long and still left out things. I perfer the books, drop your pride and pick up a copy of the first one, it is a quick read, you might like it.

BTW: I have read Tolkien, As well as Dougas Adams, Robert Heinlien, Izack Azimov, David Niven & Jerry Pournelle, H.G. Wells, Jules Verne, Charles Dickens, Edward Gibbon... I could keep going.... but won't

I thought the movie was well done. The director seemed to pay pretty good attention to background details. I haven't read any of the books, but I'm planning to as a book is usually better than the movie made from it.

Have you seen matrix? We have a guy at work who won't go to watch it. He's waiting for the book. He doesn't watch tv at all. I don't watch TV shows, but I do rent and buy DVD's and watch them.

Yes, a cartoon. Pathetic.

I read the first Harry Potter book and liked it a lot. Reminded me some of the Chronicles of Narnia, but more modern, of course.
Currently I'm reading "The Bear and the Dragon" by Tom Clancy. Good so far, but I'm barely into it.

I actually haven't gotten to read that one yet. I've heard about it though. Has anyone here read "The Caine Mutiny" by Herman Wouk? I thought it was a good book. I also like "Les Miserables" by Victor Hugo.

Is it true the Harry Potter movie isn't called "The Philosophers stone" in the US and is shortened by a few minutes or something for the Americans?

I haven't read a single one of those books, Pro'lly won't go watch the movie either. But the kids everywhere seem to like it. In an interview, JK Rolling seemed a bit "upset" though. It appears, Harry potter was supposed to be Irish or something.

There's major capitalising going on over the stories, with computer games and all. The ads for it show superbly rendered raytraced graphics, with a small sign saying not ingame footage or something like that.

The book and the movie are called "The Sorceror's Stone" in the US.

It's been a long time since I've seen an ad for a video game that showed actual in-game footage. Usually it's cut-scenes.

You should also try to read some of Victor Hugo´s books, like: "Les Miserables", "Notre-Dame de Paris" and "Last day of a Hang-man"! You might find them in english!

I agree with Yahiko. Maybe they did some market research and decided "Sorcerer's Stone" would sell better. It was the first book, after all.
