I just purcchased a new 19" viewsonic vx924 and need a system to go with it. Overclocking would be nice but not top priority. I do know that I want a amd x2 3800+. I probably will opt out for the 4400+ since my budget is around $1000. Below is what I have in mind so far. This system will be used for hardcore multitasking, video editing/design, and web development.

cpu:
AMD Athlon 64 X2 3800+ Manchester 1GHz FSB 2 x 512KB L2 Cache Socket 939 Dual Core Processor

mobo:
not sure but know I want SLI:
ASUS A8N32-SLI Deluxe Socket 939 NVIDIA nForce4 SLI X16 ATX AMD Motherboard

case:
still deciding but this is the winner so far:
NZXT TRINITY BLK Black/Silver SECC Steel ATX Mid Tower Computer Case 400 WATT PS2 ATX12V Power Supply

hdd:
not sure, assuming sata, but dont need anything over 80gb

soud card:
will be creating videos so sound quality/compression should be considered

memory:
CORSAIR ValueSelect 1GB (2 x 512MB) 184-Pin DDR SDRAM DDR 400 (PC 3200) Unbuffered Dual Channel Kit System Memory

dvd writer:
thinking about upgrading to 8mb cache:
LITE-ON Black ATAPI / E-IDE DVD Burner Model SHM-160P6S

keyboard:
Rosewill RK650 Silver/Black USB Slim Keyboard

This currently costs around $775 so I have room for a HDD and Sound Card and maybe dvd drive upgrade. thanks for any input!

What about your video card? Does the $775 include that? If not you're pretty limited...especially if you are looking to use SLi. (I'm assuming you just forgot the video card)

FF7 fan? So am I! In fact I still play it using the FFVII XP Patch on my gaming machine. Alright, back to reality now...

I do need a video card. I don't think I'll need HDTV out, just s-video out will do. I'm also debating 128mb over 256mb ram. The difference is about $150, but will I notice a major difference with video editing with an additional 128mb?

I have a 600w from my old system that I will transfer to the new one. The one that comes with the case will then go to the old one.

what do you recommend on the video card? 128mb or 256mb?

depend's on how much your willing to spend on a video card. i would go with 256 but it depends on which card aswell.

Could you recommend a card that would be able to handle intense graphic editing, animation, and video editing? This card will not be used for gaming. The GTX 512 is too expensive, I would be willing to spend up to $500 though.
