I want to spend less than 200 bucks on a new cpu to go along with my new EVGA 7800GT card. I'm leaning towards either the 3200+ Venice or the Opteron 146 Venus. Which would give me more bang for my buck? Will the Opteron 146 give me a better chance of hitting 2.6 GHz? I'll be using an ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 Motherboard by the way. I know it's a cheap board but I like the fact that it supports both AGP and PCI-express and I really have no need to run sli at the moment. I've heard that ASRock 939Dual-SATA2 motherboard overclocks pretty well with some particular bios updates. Btw, is this the 146 Venus cpu? http://www.pcconnection.com/ProductDetail?sku=6224603&SourceID=k15506
It's going for 181 bucks there and seems like a great deal but I'm worried because the box looks different compared to what newegg shows.... anyone???

Opty 146 is THE BEST value single core processor on the market IMO. It has been known to do up to 3.4ghz on stock air (rare but 2.8 is almost pie). Do NOT make a mistake and get a 3000 when you can get a 146. Don't get me wrong some 3000s OC well but opty is normally a better clocker.

Optys are indeed the best, my 146 is sitting happy at 2.85ghz on air, Zalman CNB7000 to be exact.

I have had it up to the magic 3ghz but temps got a little iffy at 63c underload so I backed off untill I get a bigger cooler.

Also the venice has 512kb cache Optys have 1mb

If you can find an opteron go for it I say, and good luck

Thank you guys for the replies! I noticed that the cpu was on back order for that particular website. eCost has it for about 180 after taxes and such. It's labeled as OPTERON UP 146 PIB 939 P. What does the PIB mean?

PIB stands for Processor In a Box. What I don't get is how is that 146 selling for $170 something??? On Newegg it's like $259... :?

What?

How can a chip that is identical to the top of the line fx-57 gaming chip when overclocked not be good at gaming. I have my 146 clocked at 2.85 and im the 1st into the server with BF2 and play for hours no probs.

The 146 opteron is the identical core, instructions every thing to the 3500+ yet is made of high quality parts to cope with the stress of servers.

It is a 3500+ but better quality
