Hello all, I hope somebody can help. I have been setting up a backup pc and installed a Maxtor 200G H/D to store files. Currently the PC runs fine, I have a small 15G WD H/D loaded with Windows XP Pro, chipset VIA8235.
The problem is when I install the 200G drive, the pc will not boot. No beep, will not even get to the BIOS screen. I have updated the chipset, although on boot up it still shows 7/19/2004 (??).
As soon as I unplug the drive, the pc boots normally.
As for the chipset date, that's something ECS mobos seem to have in common--the date sometimes doesn't change with bios flashes. You have the maxtor jumpered as a slave im assuming, or is it a SATA drive? Try it with ONLY the power connector connected to the drive. If it still fails to boot, the hdd is shorted out...you're outa luck. If it boots, try a different ide cable. Try the Maxtor jumpered as cable select along with the WDC drive. See if it works by itself. Most likely the drive is bad though. Let me know how it turns out.
