I don't know about US price levels but here in the UK that would be a
*really* low price - a giveaway! :0))

Not at all. Tiger Direct does NOT honor their rebates, so you'd be paying
$130 for a gig of brand-x memory. Search google for Tiger Direct Rebates
to find tons of horror stories.

Thanks, I'm off looking. Strange that they could get away with that
sort of thing. I thought they were a pretty good company.

Hey boB,
If you want a good idea how a PC company is rated, try:
http://www.resellerratings.com/index.html
It rates a half dozen criteria by actual user feedback, and tries to filter
out the company proxies sending in hyped reports.
I've heard rumblings about Tiger's good prices and rotton service for years,
so never have used them.
When it comes to memory it pays to go with a trusted seller & brand - ya
never know who's selling rejects, returns, and ???

Hi Don... That's a good tip. Thanks! Gosh... I just scanned their rated
stores. And TigerDirect scores a 7, which isn't that bad.

I've heard rumblings about Tiger's good prices and rotton service
for years, so never have used them.

I've used them for years. The good points are they are usually cheap and
they ship everything out the door right away. Since I'm only about 30
miles away from the store, I have everything (which was in stock) the
very next day. The bad points, well just look at the complains. But they
are good about taking defective items back in my experience. Although if
it works and it isn't exactly the same item as they had described, now
you have a problem. They probably get away with this since everyone
seems to use that "subject to change without notice" clause.

When it comes to memory it pays to go with a trusted seller & brand
- ya never know who's selling rejects, returns, and ???

I've purchased memory from them before and I didn't have any problems.
Although I can only think of once about 2 or 3 years ago. And I
definitely wouldn't depend on seeing any of that rebate. eCost pulls the
same stunts! Although eCost is probably far worse than TigerDirect.

Cheers!

That's the aggregate score, but their customer service catagory is about a
5, meaning half the responses were not happy campers..
On the other hand, I've used Crucial for memory several times and have never
been disappointed, nor have the other users who rated them 9.7 (out of 10)
which is about the highest you'll find if there's been a large number of
inputs. The only 10's I've seen have maybe 1 or 2 responses...

Hi Don... Yes that doesn't surprise me one bit. As like I tried to
explain before. There customer service priorities appear to be ran from
these guidelines:

1) Customer got it in a timely manner

2) Item actually works, but it may not be as described.

Now it seems that TigerDirect now feels it isn't their problem anymore.
Well that is the way it looks like to me with my many orders through
them. So I could fully understand why they have many complains. As you
should do more than that for the customer, don't you think?

Ain't that the truth! Say I never heard back how you're making out with
RealFlight G2? Got the hang of it yet?

Cheers!

I did the Crucial Scan and here's what it reported. I think it's bad.
What is RAMBUS?

==============================================
The Crucial System Scanner detected that your computer uses Rambus memory.

Unfortunately at this time, Crucial does not sell Rambus Memory Upgrades.

No that is good boB! As RAMBUS is capable of 1.6 billion bytes per
second. It is just proprietary and nobody can legally clone them without
going to court.

Cheers!

That's great news. I have been searching and so far can't find any 512
RIMM sticks. I did find:

256MB 800MHz RAMBUS (32bit) - $ 55.00
# aka RIMM 3200
# 40ns, 2.5V
# 32bit, 232-pin RIMM
# for 400MHz FSB CPU's
# 3.2GB/s
# Samsung quality!
# Lifetime Warranty
# Gold Pins

http://www.mushkin.com/ - who come out pretty good at Bizrate.com.

Would adding 2 256 sticks help or should I look some more for 512's?

Bob,

Two things you can try :

1) Call Gateway and ask them what they sell as an upgrade and ask them for
the manufacturers part number. The sales person might resist a little but
with a little persistence they will give it to you. I did that once with my
other Gateway and found the modules elsewhere cheaper.

2) Try Kingston technology memory configurator and see what it turns up.
google for kingston.

Thanks Bill. I have e-mailed them about the upgrade but a call might
bear a better answer.
