We have a W2K Active Directory with Windows XP Pro
clients. There is also a resource NT domain containing an
NT 4.0 Server.

The XP clients are using shares from the NT Server. In
particular the users have roaming profiles and home
directories stored on the NT Server (with My Documents
redirected to their home directory).

When the users logout you always see a file
synchronisation dialog (presumably sync'ing their offline
folders). Warnings appear in the event log that you
shouldn't use offline folders with Roaming Profiles, and
that you should disable Offline Caching on the Roaming
Profile share. I can see how to do this if the server was
running W2K - but not if it is an NT Server - there is no
equivalent dialog that I can find?

How do I disable Offline Caching on a share on an NT
Server? I'd like to disable it on both the Roaming Profile
and Home Directory Shares. Any ideas would be appreciated.

I have tried using GPOs to disable offline folders for the
users / XP clients - without any success yet (although
there are some GPOs I haven't tried). But it seems better
to me to disable caching just for this NT Server? The
stuff I've read in the 2003 Deployment Kit seems to
suggest that a lot of the GPO disable settings don't
affect a share with Offline Caching enabled anyway.

Hi Paul,

Thanks for posting!

Since Windows NT is out of support for now, my suggestion will be upgrading
that server to Windows 2000 or Windows Server 2003.

At the same time, I will try to do some research to see if it is possible
to disable that caching on a Windows NT box.

Have a great day!

Thanks, Jeff.

It would be extremely useful if I could achieve this
without upgrading at the moment! I really would appreciate
your efforts to find a fix.

Thanks,

Paul

There is no way.

* Disable Write-Behind Disk Caching

Note: these don't really seem to work.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rdr\Parameters\
UseWriteBehind REGDWORD 0
To enable it use 1 and to disable use 0

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Rdr\Parameters\
UseAsyncWriteBehind REGDWORD 0
To enable it use 1 and to disable use 0

They *may* work for removable drives, but I wouldn't count on it.

www.sysinternals.com has a sync program that flushes the disk buffers -
you could call it periodically.

Hi Paul,

Based on my further research, there is no way for NT as said below:

842007 You experience synchronization problems if you do not disable the
cache
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=842007

Notes

- You can disable the cache option only on shared folders that are hosted
by computers that run Windows Server 2003 or Microsoft Windows 2000 Server.

- We recommend that you store the roaming user profiles and the
offline-enabled shared folders on a separate server, whenever possible.

Thus, a recommendation is to upgrade your server OS to Win2k or Win2k3.

Have a nice day!
