Hello,

I am running Window NT 4.0 server, SP6.

I want to add a 250 Gb drive (I am not replacing the boot drive, just adding
a second drive).

When I went under Disk Administrator the drive came up with only about 131
Gb.

Is there a way to get it to see the whole 250 Gb or am I past the known
limit?

Thanks.

Mike

If memory serves... NT is capable of accessing 2 TB drives... so I don't
think it would be a limitation of the OS itself.

Maybe a limitation of the MB BIOS? You may want to see if there are any
firmware updates for your server's MB (or SCSI controller if you're using
SCSI.)

Just a thought.

Mike

The size you mention, 250GB, makes me believe that this is an IDE disk. In
that case, there is a problem with 48-bit LBA, and NT4 has currently no
solution for this problem. Win2000 and XP, do have a solution, as this MS
Knowledge Base article describes:

Hi,

Assuming you are dealing with an ATAPI (IDE) Hard Disk, you have struck the
problem caused by the limitations of Logical Block Addressing (LBA) that existed
prior to the creation of the new 48bit LBA standard (max disk size on the old
LBA was 137GB).

Some people have reported success with using proprietory drivers for their IDE
controllers to overcome this problem. If the manufacturer provides NT4 drivers
for their controllers (most motherboard based controllers would undoubtedly NOT
have such drivers available unfortunately) the larger sized hard disk drives
should then be able to be recognised and used. I believe Promise technology are
an example of a manufacturer that supplies such hardware and driver support, but
there are probably several others.

There is NO inherint limitation in NT4 itself preventing larger volumes of
drives (the theoretical max size on NT4 is 16EB - approx 18000TB) but the
current problem you will be encountering is caused by the ATAPI driver and/or
your motherboard BIOS/hardware.

Have a look at http://nt4ref.zcm.com.au/bigdisk.htm for more info on NT$ and
large Hard Drives.

Calvin.
