My NT 4.0 server just bit the big one. When I try to restart it I get the
blue screen of death, letting me know I can run /CRASHDEBUG on the next
restart ( which I cn never get to).
I have NT 4.0 SP6a with an Adaptec AAA-131/133U2 SCSI controller card. The
boot disk is also on the Adaptec card. How can I re-install the system on
the boot disk?
Archived from groups: microsoft.public.windowsnt.setup (More info?)
You have a tough one.
When you first boot up you should see the disk(s) in the rom bios display.
If you do not see them then you will have to confirm the SCSI controller and
cables are ok.
there should be a floppy or cd with utilities from Adaptec to test this on a
dos enviorment.
Depending on the motherboard you have, you may be able to boot from a dos
enbabled CD.
If not then a Dos enabled Floppy.
I estimate you will spend about 5-20 hours on this. if you don't have all
the pieces

Thanks for getting back to me. The SCSI disks are recognized during boot up
( disks, CD and tape drive). After that, I see the memory dump on a blue
screen.

I don't suppose you made the floppy emergency disks?

Made one every week. When I try to do a repair install though, the install
program (NT) tells me it can't find a CD. Should I attach a IDE CD and not
use the SCSI CD?

Confirm that the SCSI controller and disk hardware is working.
You can use a copy of IBM/Hitachi DFT (Drive Fitness Test) to check the status
of your disks attached to SCSI.
There's usually a reason for sudden and unexpected problems like this.

unless this aborts the process, you should be able to get up.
there a a couple of possiblities.
since the Bios query is done differently than a Track sector query, there
may still be problems with the hardware.
Or
The driver for the CD, in NT is corrupted.
I forgot to ask. are the Drives NTSF or Fat.

I ran a quicktest using the DFT program and it said the boot disk is in good
shape. However, when I started the program, it told me there were problems
with ports 340 and one other on the Adaptec Card.
Is there a piece of software using a bootable DOS disk to see if this is the
problem?

They're NTFS.
I tried repairing it but it keeps giving me a boot disk failure when I try
to restart. I can't determine whther its a SCSI card problem or a SCSI disk
problem.
