I've got no idea what makes a good dvd burner besides it's write speed and whether it's dual layer compatible or not so please help me out!

I'm trying to cut corners with my new pc so I have as much money as possible to spend on stuff like the cpu and graphics card etc...

Shall I just buy one at random or is there anything specific I should be looking for?

Thanks!!

Personally I have had no issues at all with the LG multiwriters - the latest being the GSA-4167BA or BAL (beige or black colour - same drive!). These are OEM drives, so no software with them, go for the more expensive retail drives with software (such as Nero Burning ROM) or you could just buy Nero seperately as 'OEM software' for very little.

The drives do ALL formats of DVD including DVD-RAM, something I find useful for backups because it does not require any specialist software (you put the disk in and it appears and works in Windows like any other drive, just drag files to it!). It writes at the highest speed and I have never had a coaster from it at all!

What more could you ask for? They're fairly cheap as well, but not cheap and nasty...

The BenQ DW1640 is most excellent. It's well reviewed, and has given us great service for the last 5 months or so in our office. We use it in customer PCs and have had zero complaints or troubles.
