a review... Seems alright. desktop terms it's probably around a Radeon 9800 I guess, although I only skimmed that article...
You'd be able to play most newer games, but 512Mb of RAM would limit you a little there, plus you wouldn't be able to play at the native res of the screen for most of them, so it wouldn't look as good as it might otherwise. (wouldn't be too bad though I think).
Laptops and gaming don't really mix, IMO. But that just could be because my lappy has Ati Rage Mobility graphics, and barely runs freelancer .. But it runs nethack fine
You buying both a desktop and a laptop? Won the lottery?
lol no i am going to buy either one or the other. I really want a desktop to play games but my parents want me to get a laptop for school. I understand the benefits for having a laptop with the portability and all, but i really want tot be able to play games. So im researching both and trying to figure out which is going to be the best in the long run.
yes i know there are gaming laptops but my budget doesnt allow for the highend ones. Ive been looking at the Mayhem G3 S34 but thats probably the most my budget will allow, let alone 2 grand. Thats why i want to get a desktop b/c then i can play games easier. But my parent will give little if any money to me to get a desktop. They think that a laptop will benefit schoolwork more. Which i true b/c of all the debate work i do at school it would be awsome not to have to depand on crappy school notebook. Which are like 500 dollar dell things that dont even have a floppy or disc drive!! 8O
Here's a decent Sony Vaio from Best Buy. It has NVIDIA GeForce Go 6400 graphics with 128MB video memory. Go 6400 is at about the same performance level as the ATI X600. It's on sale for only $1099 right now:
You could also get a Dell 9300 with 256MB NVIDA® GeForce™ Go 6800 and 17" UXGA screen for $1257 using coupon code G76?BXMPC5919D for $750 off a notebook of $1999 or more. These coupons expire fast though.
Display to UXGA for $125
RAM to 1GB for $100
Hard Drive to 80GB for $29
CD drive to DVD burner for $75
Wireless card to Intel® PRO/Wireless 2915 for $30
Video card to Nvidia 6800 for $199
That puts the price to $2007 minus $750 coupon for $1257 total. You might not even got charged tax depending where you live.
ATI RADEON XPRESS 200M IGP graphics with 128MB DDR dedicated video memory
im mainly going to be playing WoW. And Maybe dabble in BF2 and stuff like that if i end up gettin g a laptop. BUt i dont want it anywhere near the low end of the graphics settings on a laptop. So is the 128mb memory enough?
Its pretty good, AMD 64 3500, 1gb of ram, 128mb graphics card. For only a grand! Sounds like a winner to me, even if it is covered with loaded programs and crap.
Visit abs, alienware, etc. Or try Newegg.com and choose the 6600 or higher GPU for your laptop.
Now lets not forget, the more advance the GPU is especially for gaming, the higher your laptop will cost (can gover $2200). Meaning you are less likely to find such in a typical in-store laptops.
However it's a bit below a GF6800 thanks mainly to it's 256bit memory (that's 256bit not 256MB).
I have played HL2, D3, FartCry, Morrowind, SplinterCell3, BF Vietnam, Killswitch and UT2K4 and enjoyed them all at their comfortable settings (although did have to OC the card to finish FartCry using cryvision @ it's 1280x720 setting). I am gong to install F.E.A.R. on it in a week or so once I have time, but I don't expect any issue their either.
Simply put get AT least the X700 or X1600 mobility, forget the lesser cards and if you can, get something better like a GF6800 or X800 or better.

Where did you get the coupon code?
What did you guys think about the HP notebook though? I though it is speced good, although its from best buy but i could just delete all the spyware

X200M is NOT for gaming, it's for seeing what other people are playing on gaming laptops.
I also doubt the 128MB of dedicated memory, not that it would matter much. I'm almost certain that's a typo (but you'd have to check with HP to be sure) integrated almost always has a small dedicated number and then suplements the rest from system memory.

There are a lot of sites out there that track tech bargains and the like. One that I always visit is the aptly named techbargains.com. It's updated throughout each day. Look down the page for the Dell coupons. They seem to run them every week so if you like a deal and miss it, just keep checking back.
True in general, but the new Dell XPS is available with a nVidia 7800, which will game the socks off most home systems. Of course the XPS with a 7800 is $2.5k plus but if you got the cash laptops will game just fine.
1720 is a average lo score for your card. some go to 3000+ (as 6600go also)
So why are you saying that x700 is **far** better than a 6600 ?
First you need to edit your link if you're trying to compare the MX700 to the GF6600GO, you just linked to the MX1600 review. And just to help you out X1600 =/= GF6600.
You're right it's not far better than the GF6600 GO, it's just better than the GF6600GO, the far was for the first two.
The vertex power alone is 2:1, and most GF6600s are clocked lower than the X700, though both are clocked wherever their notebook mfr decide to set them.
You find me a review that shows the GF6600GO ahead of the MRX700, then we'll talk further.
What is the significance of the UXGA Display with TrueLife on the screen? Is it really bad if i drop it?
I like the Dell alot, big consideration. That coupon site is hard to naviate though.
The regular WXGA display has a resolution of 1440 x 900. The UXGA has a resolution of 1920 x 1200 and also features a little brighter screen. I'd recommend not dropping it, although notebooks are designed to take a cetain amount of beating. Another idea would be to skip the tighter display and put the money into an extended warranty. Dell offers a couple of different warranty options that include a damaged LCD screen. The basic warranty doesn't cover that, so read up on them.
Played with the X700 mobility for about a week and liked it. That said it was 128MB deceicated ram. I would hesitate a little to buy a 64mb version. It is conciderably better than the 9700pro mobility and it games just fine. You can't go wrong if you buy the dell they probably make the best overall laptop around the 9300 with a 6800go would be great. I have a buddy with the XPS Gen2 (basically the same as the 9300) and it games great. If you can afford the extra warrenty go for it, it is a complete package that covers acts of stupidity and lets face it that is a good thing most times.
