I know this sounds obvious, but I didn't expect such a major improvement in my system responsiveness!
I dug out an old Live! 5.1 card and fitted it to my rig (2.6Ghz P4 Northwood @ 3.25Ghz, MSI 875P-Neo FIS2R, 2x 512Mb Geil Ultra-X 4400, Radeon 9800 Pro - modded to XT), disabled the onboard sound and the system actually feels much more responsive...no little hangups when doing stuff, instant loading up of system properties...very wierd!
I know there is a CPU overhead from the onboard sound when its in use i.e. 2-10% but this simple change of soundcard really seems to have made a difference - think I'll benchmark it in a minute to see if its just me!
Just my $0.02...but might be worth trying yourself if you've got an old card laying around...
