Possible Microsoft Kill Switch

If this turns out to be true, I'd say that this would be the all time dumb move for MS to pull!

Microsoft is about to pull off the biggest Technical back-lash in computer history. More than 50% of the people buy Windows for its ease and compatability. If people start getting problems with ligitimate windows and start getting notises from update about this WGA and then they get the kill switch and when they innocently call microsoft and ask what haened . and they reply by saying "go and buy another Copy, and everything will be fine" i'm sure more than a few redneck will be out with their hillbilly cars shooting at nerds(because their wives/sisters or at best 1st cousins. cant surf the WorldwideMessenger(MSNMESSENGER and YAHOO!MESSENGER)

I was just about to click the Software category and post a 'what's a good linux distro' question when I thought I'd refresh the Other one more time...

I'd say great minds think alike, but I know mine isn't all that great...

Ubuntu is a great one for (relative) ease-of-use.

Thanks Snorkius. That will most likely be my first choice.

They should apologize, publicly and profusely, for mixing an anti-piracy tool in with security updates and take steps to make sure that it never happens again.

And they should find whoever pushed the Stupid button in this case and put them on telephone support duty for the next six months. That might be an appropriate punishment.

Gotta luv that one!

Those conniving, back-stabbing sons a bitches! I downloaded that update and when I read through this thread, I decided to go and uninstall the update. Guess what? IT IS THE ONLY UPDATE YOU CANNOT UNINSTALL. Outrageous! If this isn't true, than why can't I uninstall the very update in question? :x  :x

Since Adaware free was such a good product I decided what the heck and purchased the pro version which allows the activation of the AdWatch feature, it presently has the feature of WGA that tries every time the computer starts to contact Microsoft, blocked and guarantined.

The Nforce firewall also enforced the fact that this feature was constantly trying to contact MS, but the WinXP Firewall has never mentioned its existence, I think that lawsuit in progress you posted will have some serious backlash for MS, we'll see!

To make your copy of WindowsXP legal again one would need to run this patch instead of the one M$ provided. Use their own illegal weapon against them.

Wuz, It may be better to just inform people to use firewalls different from the MS brand, that will detect and successfully block the attempts of this MS spyware implant, than to have them install Beta software affecting the OP/SYS not knowing the full after effects of its installation.

Just in case theres an OP/SYS this is applied to on the brink of failure and fails after installation at your suggestion.

Its not an impossibility.

You Think?

[The following material will go into my upcomming siggy]

People who now have the WGA update in their copy of WindowsXP are now running an ILLEGAL OS!
It's illegal because it contains the M$ spyware and by law any system running illegal software e.g. WGA is deemed punishable.

To make your copy of WindowsXP legal again one would need to run this patch instead of the one M$ provided. Use their own illegal weapon against them.

I say this once again, if you're running WindowsXP with WGA from M$, you're running an ILLEGAL OS!!!

*takes a bow*

What used to be illegal is now logically legal and for once us pirates are going to fight for you guys.

in principle, how is this any different from making people activate their copy online or over the phone? remember the big stink that WPA raised back in 2000/2001? Funny how it all just went away... perhaps it went away because WPA was cracked and the pirates got what they wanted; a free copy of windows.

now look, i'm probably the biggest pirate in here and i ain't saying that what M$ is doing is right... but let's be honest here. A very large percentage of machines worldwide are using pirated copies of XP. No one knows for sure how many, but if you took Asia and Russia into account, I'd say at least 25% of all machines (worldwide) are using pirated copies.

to put that in perspective, imagine if 25% of all the cars on the road were stolen directly from the dealership or factory? what measures do you think GM, Ford, and Toyota would take? I would be willing to bet they'd be far more intrusive than WGA.

i'm not saying i feel sorry for M$, i'm just saying that i think M$ is entitled to protect its software. if you don't like it, run linux or MacOS.

p.s., I don't recall this much hoopla over Steam, which is essentially the same thing.

Reply to mpjesse

Steam isn't an OS.

Anyways its odd that they're doing all this, the pirating of thier software does way more good then harm. Sure they're potentially losing a lot of money but people are using their OS, keeps market share up and stops them from using alternatives.

As for your car reference Jesse, it's not quite the same...

What if you had a cloning machine and cloned your buddy's new car...

I understand that MS has some sales goals, and that the money goes to pay off the R&D and programming and stuff, but if you are running pirated Windows, it's not like you stole a physical thing from MS...

I had three PC's running for a while... If Windows wasn't crackable, I would have had one... It isn't like every single copy of Windows that was copied would have been purchased.

That all said, I don't blame MS for protecting it's investment, but again, it will harass the innocent and the guilty among us will find a way around it...

Oh, and for the record, I will be buying Windows for my next upgrade, all this BS is too much... But I will still always have extra computers to play with, but on my main rig, it's getting to be too much...

My Creative Zen Micro Photo had a firmware update, and it would only run on SP1 or better... My main PC wasn't SP1 yet, as my key was old and blocked... When some third party apps stop working because you aren't updated, that's when you have to start worrying...

If they don't give a shit, then why did they put WGA in in the first place huh?

They do give every damn about people like me and I'm going to make them pay.

I just got off the phone with Bill. He said to tell you to name your terms and they will unconditionally surrender Friday at 10:00 am.

**Bring The Flames!** I have changed my mind. Good for Microsoft. You shouldn't be pirating in the first place, you brought it on yourself. It is your own damn fault. I love how you try and justify your illegal activities, LMFAO!

Well this may just be one thing Microsoft has to face serious repercussions from.

Especially since this WGA situation could bring down legal opportunities from major companies to sue them legitimately, maybe thats the real reason Bill Gates was stepping down.
