All CPUs for Socket 754 only work with a single DDR400 memory interface, which adds up to a maximum memory transfer rate of 3 GB/s. A memory expansion of more than a gigabyte caused frequent problems.

I have a 1.5 GB memory on a Socket 754 board! Do I need to take my 512MB stick out and get better performance? This is a new twist for me...

It's possible. My board only runs at 400 with the first memory slot. Any other memory in the second slot slows it down to 333. If your board has 3 slots, it may run fine at 400 with only the first 2 filled.
