I am about to buy:

AMD Athlon 64 x2 4200+ (dual core, heard its better for multi-tasking)
ASUS A8N-SLI Premium (best for money?)
XFX Geforce 7800GT (
Corsair XMS 1GB (2 x 512 mb)
Coolermaster Real Power 450W

Now, I'm not a huge gamer but would like a decent card. I am a big multitasker, winRARer. Am I wasting money with the 7800GT that could be used better somewhere else?

What do you guys think? Thanks so much.

My take on this:

1. AMD Socket 939 Opteron 170 2.0GHz 2x1MB L2 Cache (The dual-core Opterons perform better than the dual-core Athlon 64's, and on Socket 939 don't require Registered DIMMs)

2. Radeon X800 Pro 256MB (considerably less cost, and still a good card)

3. Corsair XMS 2GB Kit CL 2-3-3-6 TWINX2048-3200C2

If you are a serious multi-tasker, the dual-core Opteron and extra 1GB of RAM will really help.

Are you an overclocker? If you're an OCer, get the Opteron. If not, the X2's perform about the same (4200+ is just a tad faster than the 170 which is equal to what woul be an X2 4000+ if AMD made one). Actually, get the fastest one for the best price your budget allows if you're not overclocking. (i.e., for non-OC, the 175 = 4400+ in specs, if 175 is cheaper get that, if 4400 is cheaper get that.)

If you want to play the newest games at high resolution and high details then the 7800GT isn't overkill, though it is a lot of card for a 'casual' gamer. A 6800GS is $100 less and good too - though not as good as the 7800 of course... X800Pro, etc are all pretty good cards for their price ranges, its just how much card is your gaming worth.

Like Angeldeath I think 2GB if you can afford it is good.
