Greetings. We are running Terminal Server 2003 and come across this
issue - sessions are knocked off and taken over by users logging in
wth the same user name. For example, Amy is first logged in as
Terminal User ’TSUSER1’ and is running MS Project, and Tom from
another computer logged in as ’TSUSER1’ again. Amy’s session
was given a message ’The remote session was disconnected because
another user has connected to the session’ and terminated, while
Tom’s computer picked up Amy’s session with the MS Project still
alive.

I have experimented with the group policy setting "Restrict each user
to one session" but to no avail. Would anyone please advise what I
have done wrong and what settings I should have to overcome this
problem.

Thank you very much.

If you restrict users to one session (which is the default on 2003
TS), this is by design.
The real problem is that you are using shared accounts. This is never
a good idea, but even worse on a terminal server.

If you still want to continue doing so, you have to disabled the
"Restrict each user to one session" setting.

Verify if you group policy is applied at all. Make some innocent, but
obvious change, like removing "Run" from the Start Menu to check it.
Run gpupdate /force after modifying the policy to update the
settings.
