I have a HP CP 1700. It prints at LPT1 perfectly, but it
doesn't print when it's connected with USB. It just says
"This document fail to print". I recently get hold of this
printer so I don't know its history.

Under its property, there are two likely USB ports listed.
One is USB001, which has the description of "Virtual print
port for USB". The other is DOT4_001, which has the
description "HP color inkjet cp1700 USB". The printer is
default at DOT4_001. I tried both ports with no luck.
Reinstall the most recent driver from HP site doesn't help
either. USB device like cameras can be used on the physical
port just fine. Any help please.

We have one of these things and it installed just fine out of the box.

It shows up on our system as printing to the DOT4... device.

Is printing to the // port actually any slower ? If not, why use USB ?

I'm not the OP, but had similar problems. In addition
to not wanting to give up an IRQ for the LPT, printer
I/O was unreliable on either LPT or USB. This is on
Windows 2000.

I ended up getting a J6042A LAN module, and haven't
had any I/O problems since. At the time I bought mine,
HP was also offering a cheaper J6039A module and a
J6062A wireless.

We use our CP on w2k, mostly with USB and have had no problems. I think
we used it for a while with // too. Can't judge the speed from that
though. The // port machine was a slow old pre USB critter.
