I have a new HP iPAQ h6315. Last night the battery ran completely down and
I lost everything -- all my data plus installed programs. It reverted back
to out-of-box. I could recover most of my stuff as I sync from Outlook
although I lost the weekends activity, and I will have to reinstall
programs. One issue that bugs me, though. When I when to re-establish the
partnership, it wouldn't let me use the same name for the device. It, of
course, wouldn't let me use my other preferred names either since I have
used them before on previous devices. I have no idea how to delete the
memory of those old setups from ActiveSync so I can use them again and won't
have them 'hanging' around. Anyone have any ideas?
Also, I'm curious why this happened in the first place. My battery was at
about 50% when I went to bed, and there is supposed to be a battery backup
(I never lost all this with my h2215 -- the time or two where my battery ran
completely down, the backup seemed to kick in). Can't understand why it
drained so quickly (it was off) and why the battery backup didn't kick in.
Thanks,

Make sure that no device is connected to ActiveSync. Then open the File menu
in ActiveSync on the PC. You can select a current partnership from the
"Mobile Devices" submenu, followed by the "Delete Partnership" command.

All Pocket PCs turn on briefly at midnight to prepare for the new day. They
normally do power off automatically after a minute or so. If you have an
application open that prevents the power-down (such as Windows Media
Player), it will stay on until the battery is drained.

Sorry to bother you, but I have one follow-up. It appears I can only delete
the current partnership (that's the one it implies I'm deleting when I do
that). However, that's the only partnership that I do NOT want to delete
(I'd like to delete all the others -- there are three that I no longer
want). Thanks,
Jim

Select the one(s) that you want to delete from the "Mobile Devices" submenu
and then choose the "Delete Partnership" command. Repeat this for all
partnerships that you want to get rid of.

Alternatively, and i have done this several times when partnerships have
been lost, simply uninstall activesync and then re-install. That will get
rid of ALL the partnerships that exist.

There have been posts in the past about backup programs that copy everything
on your device- it may be worth considering one. My Asus came with 2 backup
programs- one even wakes itself up and backs up the machine to storage card
when the battery gets to 15% (some newer machines now have internal flash
memory that can be used).
