i've got a coworker who is for some odd reason is completely dissatisfied with is almost brand new AMD system, and instead is opting to go Intel. he's basically packaging the guts of the system:

AMD x2 4800+
ASUS A8V Deluxe
2 1GB sticks of memory
256MB AGP 6800Ultra

all for $800

now if i purchase this, i will most likely opt to part out the 6800Ultra and the motherboard and use the processor and memory in a SFF system and make a pretty powerful all-in one pc which will be used for a media center+mild gaming.

probably go ahead and purchase:
Q-Pack case ($80)
MSI K8NGM2-FID 6150 ($82)
Lite-on DVD-RW ($40)
Seagate 300GB HD ($135)
Viewsonic 27" LCD Television ($735)

i've got two questions:
1.) how much would i be looking at getting if i sold off the MB and VC, and would it be too much of a pain to seel them?
2.) is this system overkill and uneccessary, and would i be better off saving money for a while and picking up parts in a few months?

Depends where you sell it, but I can't imagine you getting more than $250, especially since it's used. You'll may have a hard time selling, since I don't know too many people who wants an AGP 6800 even if it is an Ultra, and an old A8V. In short, it probably will be a pain.

If anything, your 27" is overkill. The 4800+ probably is too. Why the hell did your friend get a 4800+ and a junk motherboard? If you want dual core, why not an Opteron 165? Or even the 3800+? The 2x1GB of ram still makes the deal tempting, depending on what it is.
