I've got a small network at home, with an Internet router that's also my
DHCP and DNS server. I have a Windows 2000 server with a fixed IP that I'm
trying to use for RRAS (VPN).
With my laptop, I'm going across the country and I'm using a dial-up
connection to get on the Internet. I've created a VPN connection to my home
network, which is working fine (I'm getting an IP address from my home DHCP,
I can map to my server's shares, and so on).
However, what I can't do from my laptop, is get on the Internet though my
home network. I think the default gateway isn't correct somewhere. When I
start the RRAS, it reserve 10 IP's from my DHCP server, and ofcourse the
gateway is correct there (pointed to my Internet Router), but apparently
it's not working fine... So, from my laptop, I can ping my server, even my
router, but for instance when I start Internet Explorer, I can't get on the
Internet. I can get on the webpage of my router though. But I can't get
outside of my network to the Internet...
The problem could be here: when setting up the RRAS, the wizard asks me
where my Internet connection is, and I can select two options from a list:
<no internet connection> and <LAN> (this is my network card). However, I
can only select the first item, because when trying to select the last item
the wizard complains that the VPN server needs this connection... Do I need
two sepate network cards (one for Internet and one for the internal network)
in orde for this to work???
Any suggestions? I would really appreciate this.
BTW... I know that when I disable VPN on the laptop, that I can get on the
Internet directly, but this is not my intension. I'd like to know why the
above situation is not working.
