hi

What are peoples opinions on SP2? If you're not wanting to use the XP
Firewall (no offence to any here who work for MS, but given the number of
security flaws that have been exploited in previous MS products/updates I
wouldn't feel comfortable using it) don't use Windows Media Player 9 and
already have a pop-up blocker is there much point in installing it?

And does anyone know why it's such a huge file - from the feature list I
can't see why it would be that size?

regards

Kline

SP2 is considered a "Critical Update" and updates over
5 million lines of code in Windows XP. You'll experience
stronger security and a bit more performance by installing SP2.
If you are relying on some negative information about SP2
found in newsgroups, remember that only folks with issues
tend to post and many issues are not even related to SP2.
Additionally, future critical updates will require that SP2 be
installed as a prerequisite.

Sp2 must be installed as a requisite to a requisite (a prerequisite) ?

That's like saying preloaded. It's either loaded or it isn't! You can't load
it before it's loaded, which would equal a preload!

Well, if you'd read correctly, that isn't what the basis is behind that term. Carey stated nothing about SP2 being "prerequisite", only the "prerequisite" for future fixes after the fact if it is installed. All you did was take out of context words to mean what you want it to mean!

A pre-requisite to having future updates installed is owning a computer.
Having SP2 installed is a "requisite"!

English a second language?

future (not now later) critical updates will require
(need) that SP2 be installed (reside on your computer) as
a prerequisite. (beforehand)

pre·req·ui·site

adj.
Required or necessary as a prior condition: Competence is
prerequisite to promotion. (apparently not to posting in
Newsgroups however)

n.
Something that is prerequisite, as a course that is
required prior to taking an advanced course.

Perhaps they can bring you a nice English dictionary at
the home.

Oh Dear!

I suggest taking an English remedial course, because you are totally wrong; just look up the definition and the usage of the word.

Installed SP2 here over a week ago and have had no major problems. I do not
use the Windows firewall. Instead, I use Kerio 2.1.5 which I have used for
several years.

I installed SP2 on two computers Thurs. and do not have any problems at all.
I, too, agree with the earlier post which states that folks with problems
tend to post more than those of us fortunate enough to have no problems.
After reading some of these horror stories, I was hesitant to upgrade. Now
I am very glad I did so.

The change to windows messenger was the only thing to really bother me.
So far all is well.

Is there a Microsoft website that says that?

I really enjoyed this post...requisite, prerequisite...all funny. Now, as
far as the original question...I put this on 2 computers and haven't had any
problems at all and I think that things may have even speeded up a bit. It's
unfortunate that even as we speak idiots/hackers are trying to thwart any
opening that MS left the tiny bit vulnerable. I would love to see these
people/a-holes put away for a very long time, versus the little slap on the
wrist that they mete out now. How do you think these dweebs would fare in a
real prison environment? Not too well. We wouldn't need to have these
continious 'critical updates' if they would just stay in their little Linux
world and leave the 'evil MS empire' alone.

My 2 cents
