Notice the two monitors.
The LCD is much more expensive, but it looks sooo nice, not that the crt doesn't but supposedly LCD is better for movies, and CRT for gaming. If I went with the CRT I could take the extra money and buy a 7800gtx instead of gt.

What should i do.

lcds are great if your wanting to save space. but if you have the room go with a crt. Way better performance, image quality, yadda yadda. I tried an lcd and it just sucked. They ghost images, and strain your eyes.

lcds have come along way youll be hard put to find a ghosting LCD now, i would go lcd for the space and less heat. and there easier on the eyes

IMHO, go with the LCD! Could be a bit more money, but if you do the research and shop around, a nice quality 19" LCD can be cheaper than a high end 19" CRT. If your solely want uber high resolution and insane refresh rates, the CRT is "better". But if you can "live" with 1280x1024 w/ 60hertz refresh rate, then an nice LCD will be more than adequate. Don't purchase solely on brand name, just because it's a viewsonic or samsung won't make it "better" than a no-or-little-known-name brand. Keep in mind that they are a limited number of panel manufacturers who sell to lesser name LCD makers; it's the same equipment, same performance, but without the extra name-brand cost. For example, Hyundai makes the L90D+ which uses the same 8ms panel in the Samsung model you've quoted but it sells on NewEgg for $70+/- less than the Samsung. Again, same equipment, same performance, but at a lesser cost. LCD's have have greatly improved and the issues of ghosting, tearing, poor response times, and other arguements against them have been minimized. Also, you can't even compare a 17" CRT to a 19"LCD, not even playing the same game, let alone in the same ballpark!

I just replaced my ailing 17" flat CRT with a 19" LCD and I LOVE IT! The colors are so much more vivid it's amazing. I got a Samsung 940b.

The only problem you have with the 915n listed here is that it doesn't have digital input (DVI). I tried both the analog and digital with the 940 just to see the difference and it's definitely noticeable so don't get a LCD without a DVI!

Refresh rate is one of the key specs for a LCD and gaming. Some say below 16ms is good, mine is 8ms and I have no ghosting with Half Life 2 or Doom3 at the native 1280x1024. DVD movies look great too. Some newer (more expensive) monitors offer 4 or even 2ms as well.

I have a dying 21" CRT which used to retail for $1600 that I can't wait to replace with an LCD.

A low latency 1280x1024 or better LCD in fact.

CRTs have better latency, better colors and higher resolutions, however they consume more power, emit dangerous radiation, are bad for your eyes, take up a lot of space, weigh a TON and are not very environmentally friendly.

I'm not a crazy tree-hugger but we do not need to watch power consumption and try to protect the environment whenever possible :-)

Semper Fi Linux on!

Unless you are doing prepress work and need something with a more accurate color spectrum. I would go with the LCD, right now I use a 21"CRT because I am in the graphics field but I am just waiting for the right LCD to come out with better colors so I can get this 75lb. monster off my desk (don't get me wrong I love it, but as what was stated earlier..energy consumption, space and all this lovely radiation is an issue so it just makes sense).
Just got to find one that has the right refresh rate and picture quality and go for it.

I have two Samsung 930b mated to a 7800GT card and they work flawlessly. I'm an online gamer and there is no ghosting and the picture is awesome. LCD's are the way to go if you really wanna save space and have a nice bright screen.

I have a Viewsonic P95f+ which is basically the end of the line in current CRT technology. Compared with other CRTs its like comparing a black and white screen to a colour one. I havent had the opportunity to put it beside a decent lcd screen, would be interesting. But when I build my next comp, I will definately be getting an LCD. If you can find one with under 8ms response time, and decent specs, then you should be ok. If not, I strongly suggest getting my monitor, I guarantee you wont be dissapointed.

You can occasionally find a Dell 2001FP (20.1"/1600x1200) for $503 on sale direct from Dell, free shipping....

Mine arrived in two days...love it!

I have same Viewsonic monitor as you, and I just upgraded to a Dell 2405FPW. It blows the doors off that it. LCD rules, I never want another CRT

Look through Tom's for their LCD reviews; they do very thorough reviews aimed at gamers. Samsung makes one of the best 19" LCD panels for gaming, but may other manufactures use them in their monitors. Having recently moved from 19” CRT to 19" LCD (Hyundai Imagequest L90D+, w/Samsung panel) I can say without a doubt, go LCD.

CRT's are good monitors but with the radiation it's really bad
CRT's are cheaper than LCD's, Greater Refresh rate, energy consumption and bigger resolution.
About LCD sharper image, lesser energy consumption, more space, safe..
If you have enough money to buy LCD buy one!!!
but pick the LCD with great reponse rate for the price (beware of dead pixels)
about the manufacturer i think anyone makes good LCD just make sure the monitor maker isn't lyin. 8)

I don't get the whole LCD thing. Yes they take up less space,
but unless you're playing in the back of your car, who cares?
Yes, they're heavier, but I took mine out of the box, put it on my
desk, and it'll never move again 'til it dies.
As for power, my 19" NEC uses a whopping 103 watts. Like a
lightbulb. Not a ton I think.

Get a good CRT. No LCD can match it's picture quality yet.
Period. Besides, for what some people are paying for their
'gaming' LCD's, you can get a good quality CRT ANNNND an
AMD X2.

People spend a fortune getting the best quality PC parts
so they can run a game at 1280x1024 with pale colors?

As I said...I don't get it.

(here's where I start getting slammed...Ha!)

Sounds like you do not have an LCD, I have one Dell2405FPW, and two high end CRT's, a 19" Viewsonic and a 21" Hitachi.
The LCD is the premium monitor I choose to work and game with... cause it is better all around.
