There are five SCSI 36.4 G Hard disks installed on my
server. The RAID 5 is configured with total of 138911
MB (i.e. around 140G)logical disk space shown on the
Array Configuration Utility. By forumla, (5-1) * 36.4 G
should be equal to 145.6G. Where the heck of the 5.6G
goes to? It is also weird that the disk management shows
only the total of disk space is 135.65G with 9.77G on C
drive (Windows OS) and 125.88G on D Drive(unformated).
Who ate the total of 9.95G?
Is the disk size correct??????
Please help and thanks in advance!

36.4GB disks are calculated by the manufacturers as such:
36.4GB * 1000 * 1000 * 1000 = 36 400 000 000bytes

Now we know that to convert from bytes to megabytes to gigabytes actually
involves a factor of 1024 not 1000, hence
36 400 000 000bytes / 1024 / 1024 = 34713.7451171875 MB

Therefore
34713.7451171875 * (5-1) = 138854.98046875MB which is approximately what you
are seeing.

So what you are seeing is the result of disk manufacturers using a factor of
1000 to calculate KB, MB, GB instead of the 1024 factor which is actually
used.
