Start menu icons gone

My Start menu icons are gone.I have no clue what happened to them but i have tried anything i can think of.I have tried start menu properties and then default setting but that did not work if someone could help it would be awesome.

well 2 things could cause it, one is removing all item, but that is not likely.

maybe you customized the start menu and told it to show nothing by mistake?

1. Right click start and hit Properties
2. On the Start Menu tab select Customize
3. Under start menu size, check for number of recent items to display(it is near the bottom of the window)

nope that didnt work i cant even change the amount of recent programs to display its greyd out but i have recent items on 10

if it greyed out, on the first page(start>properties>start menu tab) is there a check next to store and display recently opened programs in the start menu?

I just cleared that check and all my items went away just like yours, when i bring it back they are gone until i open stuff then it refills(items pinned to the taskbar do not seem to re-enter, but others do.).

On the first page its greyed aout aswell i guess its just broken thats all
