Trouble with single-sheet feeder of HP 1320 printer

The single-sheet feeder on the HP 1320 must be used to print
envelopes, and other odd-sized media. When I try to use it, the
printer fails to register the presence of the media that I hand-feed
into the single-sheet feeder. My computer flashes a message that the
printer needs attention. I have tried various combinations of
removing/reinserting the media and pushing the "go" button on the
printer. What usually happens is that the printer feeds the media
through without printing anything on it! All this is very
frustrating.

Has anyone tamed the single-sheet feeder on the 1320 printer?
