Hi, I have a Linksys BEFVP41 with the latest firmware and I am trying
to connect to it with the SSH Sentinel 1.4 installed on my Win XP Pro
with the built-in firewall enabled.

I followed the following setup document:
forum.homenethelp.com/SSH_Sentinel_and_Linksys_VPN_-_Another_Setup_Document/
m_5590/tm.htm

But I always get the following error message: "Cannot open the VPN
connection. Check that the gateway is online and verify that you are
using the correct authentication key."

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,

John

John:

That error msg. is a generic one-it simply means you are not getting
a response on the other end.

What version of Sentinel are you using? 1.4 at a minimum is highly
recommended. I had a lot of trouble with 1.3.2.2.

Have you set your XP firewall/any other firewall you have to
allow ipsec passthrough (if it's built in) or allow UDP port 500
through?

Both Sentinel and your router keep logs. My firewall keeps very
detailed logs of IKE negotiations. Look through your router and
Sentinel logs to get what are likely to be very detailed clues. You
need to enable IKE logging in Sentinel. The dialog box is a bit
tricky-read it carefully.

Oh yeah-and I suggest you don't use detailed loggingn in Sentinel,
or you'll get a log file that's about 1,000 lines long.

9 times out of 10, IPSEC problems are because of a settings mismatch
between one end and the other.
