Having some trouble here... I'm using Super VGA adapter
for my moniter, which is what it started out with..
however, i'm having trouble changing my screen resolution.
it's currently stuck in 640x480, which is very
inconvenient. i try to change it, and it resets it to
640x480 and tells me i need to restart before the new
settings can take effect. however, the new settings never
take effect. when i go to the advanced setting for my
display properties, the general tab (compatability
section) should allow me to change this and make it so it
applies the new settings without restarting, but it won't
work. it tells me that that is what is selected, but it
continues to tell me to restart the computer. i've tried
reinstalling the driver, but it's not working. any other
ideas???

Super VGA is probably not the correct driver for full functionality of your display adapter.
You need to identify what video card you are actually using, and then download the correct driver from the manufacturer's web site.

To identify the display adapter, use this utility to get the vendor i.d.
Advanced PCI Info (V1.4)
http://www.boisepcrepair.com/downloads.php
http://www.boisepcrepair.com/programs/advancedPciInfo.zip

Submit the ID at
http://www.pcidatabase.com/

You may also be able to identify it by installing and using this informational program:
