WoW, thanks for such a quick response! Thank you for your help. Having had
this McAfee antivirus program installed by Dell when I purchased this 7/98
(my first and only computer), I'm amazed that it should suddenly be the
cause of my problem. Perhaps I should buy their newest version or is there
an anti virus program that you prefer?

I am not a great fan of McAfee and uninstalled it years ago.
I personally use this:

eTrust-Computer Associates: http://www.my-etrust.com/
This comes highly recommended for freewareL
AVG Anti-Virus: http://www.grisoft.com/
