I have had a problem starting my Win'95 computer, any help
would be much appreciated:

On start-up I get the message "Windows has detected a
registry/configuration error. Choose safe mode...etc."

When I tried to restore the registry (c:\windows> attrib -
h -r -s system.dat) the SYSTEM.DAT file was not found.
These other files were also not found: SYSTEM.DA0,
USER.DAT and USER.DA0.

In the Windows directory I could only find these files
with the correct name:
SYSTEM.I~I
SYSTEM.SIW
SYSTEM.CB
SYSTEM.FTW
USER.ACL

Have I lost the system and user files and their back-ups?
Is there any hope of restoring them?

Thanks,

Steve.

If they are not there, then I don't see how you can restore them
unless you have other backups somewhere.
The System.* files you mention look like backups of System.ini rather
than System.dat but the size will tell you that.

I don't see how you could lose all 4 files. Have you looked elsewhere
in case they have been moved?

system.da* and user.da* are system, hidden, and read only. In command line
mode, use "ATTRIB -r -s -h c:\windows\*.da* to undo the attributes.
