Have another post here about my attempts to recover a dead drive of mine (Hitachi Deskstar 160gb SATA - PCB went bad). Well, I found the exact same PCB, same part number, same firmware for super cheap locally. So I'm gonna try to replace the old PCB with the new one and hope it works.
There's a tiny ribbon cable connecting the PCB to where the motor and platters would be. I need to remove this from the PCB in order remove the old PCB. It has a tab on each side and I can pull on them evenly and get it about halfway out, then it just stops. Won't go any further. I don't want to pull much harder than I have to get it out, so I figure there's some trick to it. Anyone replaced a PCB on a drive before? If so, what's the trick to getting this little bugger out? At this point it's the only thing stopping me from swapping out boards.
On seagates (pata) they use a different conection for the motor. I don't have a Hitachi sata drive laying around to look at. Look at the new board closely, there may be a release some where. All of the ribbon connectors I have ran into just pull out.
A straight PCB swap will not work. Each PCB stores unique, drive specific information in an 8-pin "NVRAM" chip. This chip, or its contents, needs to be transferred to the donor PCB. If you tell us your model number, I can show you which chip to transfer.
