unbuffered RAM is faster, used in desktops (with S939 Athlons and Opterons, for example), but puts great strain on memory controller, so max 4 DIMMs can be used (usually)
buffered RAM is slower, used in servers (with S940 Opterons, for example), but much easier on memory controller, so more than 4 DIMMs can be used.
