When trying to open a CD-Rom application that worked fine
originally. An error message appeared: "An illegal
operation has been performed please contact your system
administrator" and wouldn't run the CD. Have seen this a
few times but never to do with the CD-ROM drive. I
wondered whether it was the disk itself, the drive
settings or a problem with the operating system.

Can it be fixed or improved?

When you get an "illegal operation" error message, click the "Details" button, and
post back with the exact details word for word, up to but not including the memory
registers.
