Sounds like you might be looking for Midway's "Sea Devil." These are easily
available. Check Ebay. One could pop up near you.

Or Midway's Sea Raider (I know, I have one in my kitchen).

There are many good gun games to choose from. I would stick with Midway and
Chicago Coin for fun and reliability. The only hard part on the 70's
shooters is that many ran off 8-track tape. I have Haunted House and Coney
Island and I still need an 8-Track for Coney Island. Don't count out the
60's. I have a Captain Kid that is a classic.

Dave:

NOS 8-track tapes are available from me for a bunch of games, or you
can download the MP3's yourself and make your own:

http://arcadearchive.com/em/sound/

I had a guy just send me an original tape from his Coney Island gun
game, but unfortunately, the tape was for a Gangbusters gun game.
I then looked at the Coney Island flyer and there's no reference of music
or a tape player. It's possible that the tape player was an option and that
Chicago Coin didn't supply a tape at all. They would have left it up to the
operator to put in a music tape of his choosing.

If I can find some appropriate music and/or sound effects for Coney Island,
I could make 8-tracks for it. The game already has electronic sound effects
for the gunshots, so all the tape is needed for is background music.

My Coney Island came with an 8-track player but no tape. It don't think
there was a game-specific tape for it, but maybe they offered something
generic. It's not timed to the game in any event, such as is the case with
Gangbusters and Haunted House.

I would like to get a "midway" type of theme music (such as a pipe organ)
for it eventually, and Mark and I have discussed this a bit and played with
a few possibile MP3 files.

I would make this suggestion. Forget the 8-track tape player for
right now. Instead go to Target and get a $10 cassette tape player.
One that you can lock the "play" button down, and turn the player
on and off (in play mode) by turning the 120 volt cord on or off.
Also make sure it has a 120 volt plug, and it has a headphone output
jack.

Now go to radio shack or any online place or ebay and get a cassette
endless tape loop. RS only sells 30 second endless tapes, which is
rather short. but you can buy online ones up to 5 minutes.
i would say 2 minutes would work, as most gun game times are
one minute. These tapes are used for outgoing messages on
phone message recorders.

Now get some music. play around. use a music editor. heck use
a video editor in music mode. create a 2 minute or longer
file you like, save it to WAV format. Get creative.

Now you can play it out your computer's sound card headphone
jack or even CD player jack. cable it to your a tape deck.
or even that $10 cassette player you just bought. Record
the music onto the endless loop tape. You can use a freeware
program to do this. I use Audio Grabber which is free.

Now to hook it up to the game. you can hook it up to *ANY*
EM gun game! Just add a switch to the game over relay
and a 120 volt plug, which toggles 120 volts on when the
game is being played. If the game originally had an 8-track
player it's even easier. Just plug the new cassette player
into the 8-track's power plug! Push the "play" button down
and keep it locked down.

Have fun and play the game! set the volume as needed.
When you have the music all done the way you like and
tested in the cassette player rig, you can give the file
to Mark and have him convert it to 8-track. Or you can
continue to use the cassette player. Just wire the game's
speaker through the tape player's headphone jack.

Or if you are really sick, go to ebay and buy an 8-track
recorder. they are less than $50. You can also buy some
blank 8-track tapes. Make your own 8-track. Actually i don't
suggest that. I would say use the cassette player or have
Mark do it. Mark has a pretty 8-track recorder rig.

There ya go!

My 1954 Keeney not only has a gun recoil coil it also use a real
Remington .22 rifle! And I agree. Plenty of love to go around for all
the eras and brands :)

My 1972 Williams Stockade didn't have a recoil, but i added it!
Very easy, i used a 1970s Gottlieb drop target reset coil and
bracket, made another bracket out of 1/8" x 1/2" flat metal i
bought at home depot. Then added a switch to the Trigger relay,
and wired the gottlieb coil to 120 volts. Works great! Pics at
http://marvin3m.com/arcade/stockad.htm

These games must have a recoil or it doesn't feel like a gun
game. Most Dale-style gun games do have a recoil solenoid (though
often it is burnt out!)

Randy:

OK, I've made some progress on that front. I've put up some MIDI files
with carnival-style music for you all to sample. If some of them are suitable
for any of the games, I could make 8-tracks from the MIDI files for you to
put in your games. Here's the link with a few MIDI files and a link to
another site with lots more to explore:

http://arcadearchive.com/em/sound/#MIDI

If anyone else has any other MIDI or MP3 files that are appropriate
background music and/or sound effects for any of these games, I'll
post them on this page if you send them to me.

Mark, I have bought the Haunted House tape from you. When I saw you have
Coney Island on your list I was very happy and know you will try your best.
I do hope you get the original soundtrack but almost any background carnival
music is better than nothing.

Not bad. If I were to pick I would say either Band #1 or #2, if the tape
are longer than needed and the game starts wherever you left off maybe loop
between the two.

Taxman:

The tape will always be longer than the tunes, so the tunes repeat a
number of time before the tape loops back to the beginning. None of these
gun games have any special logic for synchronizing the start of the game
to the start of a particular tune - they just cut on when the game starts,
and stop when the game is over. Nobody cared about the rough starts
and stops back then, I guess.

Ironically, the puppet games for little kids did sync the songs to the length of
the play.

I don't believe there ever was an original tape for Coney Island gun.
Hopefully someone can prove me wrong on this, but I'm not hopeful.

Absolutely this is a fine solution for games that don't have tape effects
tied to gameplay (like Coney Island) and I've seen it done before.

But part of the reason I like these games is because they're a part of
history, so if I can do things as originally intended by the manufacturer
I'd rather do that. Ya gotta love 8-tracks because they just scream "1973!"
;-)

Kinda like when I had a high-90-point '57 Bel Air convertible -- I refused
to put disc brakes on it because I wanted to keep it bone stock.
Unfortunately, the original power drum brake setup led to *three* total
brake failures/near accidents and I sold it because it was just too unsafe
to drive ;-)

Why, thank you Clay! The reason I love the Twin game so much is because
everyone from my 4-year-old to me all have a total gas competing against
each other. With two guys, the better shot will "steal" the shots from the
other guy -- really fun ;-) I had a pinball party for my 14-year-old
daughter the other day, and even her friends who were trying so hard to seem
disinterested couldn't get enough of Twin Pirate once they got going. It
was being played long after they'd given up on the pins, in fact.

And Twin Pirate has so many freakin' things to shoot at, climbing up,
sailing by, popping up...and moving faster as your score increases. NOT fun
to work on, but the gameplay makes up for the headaches.

I found a Twin Rifle but haven't picked it up yet -- so I can't compare the
two yet. I'm sure I'll enjoy *not* listening to the never-ending kiddie
pirate music while I play, though ;-)

Yea but nobody is going to know! are you saying you can HEAR the
difference between 8-track and cassette? And for a temporary
solution where you can't get an 8-track for a particular game
(like Coney Island), the cassette route is a great solution!
you can change the tape whenever you want to something you're
not sick of hearing! Or you can change Twin Pirate's dorky
"sailing" music to something else you made custom that you like
a lot better! ha!

No, it's for *me* ;-) Honestly, I'm the only one who plays these games
(except for an occasional pin pal) who appreciates the historic aspect of
the games. My family and "normal" friends may think they're fun and kinda
retro-cool, but I appreciate them at a deeper level. I love the *smell* of
an old EM pin, like the smell of old Lionel toy trains, or unrestored old
cars. A little off the deep end? Maybe. But I am who I am ;-)

But you're right -- you can do the cassette thing so it's totally
reversible, no problem.

Sure you can hear the difference. If your 8 track is to evoke memories of
that technology it MUST bleed over from another track at all times. ;-)
