I cannot certify that it is impossible to run two antivirus monitors,
because there may be two out there that can cohabit, but I certainly
would not try this with two of the well-known products such as McAfee
and Norton. Both of these antivirus products keep monitors running all
the time and both trym to intercept anything that might possible
contain a virus. Thus, if you were to install two of them, you would
be setting up a neverending contest in which both would be trying to
inspect the same files at the same time.

Don't install two virus scanners even if you only have one
active at a time, becaause even adding a new virus scanner
without removing the previous one properly can cause
problems due to Registry entries.

However, an on-demand scanner for DOS for a "second opinon" should work
without any problems, as long as you don't try to run it while another
Windows virus scanner is running in the background.

I use F-prot (www.f-prot.com) for DOS just to double check sometimes. No
conflicts with other anti virus software yet (have had Norton, old IBM
Antivirus and AntiVir on the same machine).

Try swallowing and breathing at the same time. Is it
possible?

Why would you want to do this?
Generally it is not a good idea to have two programs running that try to do
the same thing.

It is possible, Betty, to install two antivirus programs on the same
computer. For example, I have AVG and AVAST on mine. However, it's not a
good idea to have both providing resident protection because one will likely
interfere with the other at a very critical moment - catching a virus.

It's fine if you use one as a resident scanner and the other as a on-demand
scanner only. I use Avast only as a resident scanner. I do it because I
want the ability to cross check any positive results. Two AVs, however, do
not offer any significant additional protection versus having just one. In
fact it will be less if both have resident protection turned on since they
are likely to interfere with each other. My advice is that while it's
possible to do so you really shouldn't unless you have something special you
need to do.
