I am not able to boot my Compaq Presario. I am the
original owner and never before have had a problem with
the preinstalled windows 95 software.
I have not used the system for 8 months.
When I went to start it up, I received the error message
1790 Disk 0 Error

No fixed disk present.

How can I get it to boot so that I can access my files????

I am not very computer proficient.

Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Either the connection between the motherboard and the disk has failed
(maybe become unplugged from one end or the other, or something more
dire), or the IDE controller (part of the motherboard) has failed, or
the disk itself has failed.

IMHO, the first scenario, while desirable, is unlikely, and the last
scenario is most likely what's happened. I think you need to take your
computer to the shop.

If you haven't used the machine for several months then the motherboard
battery has probably died. Are you sure there wasn't an earlier message
about BIOS checksum failure or lost BIOS settings and some need to reset
them? If you access BIOS setup and tell the system to identify the disk
drives then they should spring back into life.
