New 6600GT garbage?

So I just upgraded my trusty Radeon 9600 Pro to an EVGA 6600GT. I have an Athy 2500+ @ stock 1.83/333 with 768 Megs and 350W power supply. I also have 2 7200 RPM drives, and a CD and DVD drives.

When I would play a game it would crash to desktop after an hour or so. Also, I have two monitors (1 DVD, 1 VGA) and the DVI monitor would go black and the start button would switch to the VGA monitor.

I have reinstalled windows with just XPSP2 and patches plus latest forceware and nothing else. Now when I try to play a game the CPU maxes to 100% solid and the memory usage soars.

If I replace the GT with the Radeon all works fine. Need a new power supply maybe? It's an Enermax and has 13A on the 12V rail so I don't know....

13a on the 12 volt might not do it. Although the 6600's aren't exactly the most power hungry cards out there.

Best thing to do, try the card on a friend's system with a good power supply...

Does the 6600GT demand a supplemental power input connector (one of your hard drive power input connectors) like the other modern cards, and if so, is there one connected on yours?

Edit: I looked on EVGA's website, and their 6600GT does require a 4 pin power input....just double checking that yours is connected...good luck

Yes, it does require a supplemental power connection and it is connected. EVGA's website lists the recommended power supply at 350W or 400W. I do have a friend that has a 6600GT as well, I recon I'll go over there and give it go. Wish me luck!

I had a similar problem which was resolved by updating the AGP Miniport driver.. I have a somewhat similar setup to yours. What MOBO are you running on?

My setup:
ASUS A7N8X-E DLX
Athlon XP 2500+
2GB Corsair XMS
EVGA 6600GT AGP 128MB
Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS
WD Raptor 74GB
Maxtor 120GB EIDE
420W P/S (Don't remember the name, but it's SILENT!)

I have the Shuttle AN-35N Ultra with the nForce 2 400 + MCP chipset (current nVidia chipset drivers installed). Not using onboard sound but an old PCI512 Sound blaster.

There aren't any driver or bios updates listed on their site though. :x

Like the other recommendations, I'd probably try it with a better power supply. My first 6600GT (Leadtek) gave me troubles when I had a 350w but they went away when I upgraded it to a 420w.

I changed the AGP options in the bios to 4X and enabled fast write. I can now play a game for a little over an hour. I am going to CompUSA now though. I figure it may cost a little more but it will be super easy to return if it doesn't solve the problem :D

Got a new Thermaltake 430W for $40 at Microcenter! It has 18A on the 12V and 32A on the 5V rails. So far so good! I looked at my old Enermax and it actually has 16A on the 12V so I don't know what gives. All seems to be running smoothly now though!
