I have a friend that wants to download Windows messenger
but she doesn't have Windows XP. Where can she find a
version tht is not for XP?

Enter "windows messenger" as is in Google and you'll see
that it only applies to Windows XP.

It allows instant messages to be sent over a network.

Like Eric wrote in his reply, Windows Messenger works with
Windows XP, but if your friend wanted to download it so
he/she could instant message others who have Windows
Messenger, he/she can use MSN Messenger. Download it here:
http://messenger.msn.com/Help/Upgrades.aspx
There are versions there for all Windows OSs.
