My pc is really messed up. i have decided to wipe it all and start over. my
friend says i can do this by entering my computer, right clicking on c, and
selecting format. he says this will wipe the hard disk. will this take the OS
with it. if so, i have 3 cd's that came with my computer. one is labeled
Microsoft Windows95 with usb support, and has the windows logo, along with a
message about a cd sampler with free games. I also have the home essentials
cd, and one labeled system CD, version 2.5, with the gateway logo on the
bottom. will these restore my os and pre-installed programs. if so, how would
i do it. any help is greatly appreciated.

In what way ?

If you don't know what's wrong, then you cannot be sure
that that course of action will be successful.

Does he now.

Where is the OS stored?

That is your Windows CD.

> I also have the home essentials cd,

That is a Microsoft applications CD.

Drivers (keyboard, mouse, sound, video etc) and other miscellaneous detritus.

You can use them to do so.

Determine if you really need to take such a drastic step.
Perhaps describe your problem(s) in detail.

If you format, you will lose everything on that drive.
The OS. Passwords. Data files. Your Product Keys.
Emails. Address Book. et cetera, et cetera.......

You will need to create a boot disk.

Run HELP, and type the word BOOT

You cannot format a drive or partition that Windows is running from. But you
have what looks like a system restore CD. Those will automatically format
the drive and restore everything back to factory new condition. Those are
usually self-booting, so make sure the BIOS is set to boot from the Cd-rom
first, then seewhat happens. The home essentials CD is just optional apps
that Gateway bundled with the computer, you don't have to install them if
you don't want to.
