Current situation: stable FreeS/WAN connection between Linux
gateway/router PCs links two LANs across half a continent -- been
working fine for more than 18 months now. It has become
mission-critical to have this VPN up; therefore I propose to replace
the existing PC-based VPN with magic VPN boxes.
Linksys? DLink? Netgear? I'm not trying to start a holy war here, I
just want a solution that will be a reasonable approximation to "set
it and forget it." NetBIOS traffic routing would be a bonus. I'd
like to stay under $350 US for each device.
For the icing on the cake I'd like to set up a third endpoint with a
wireless-capable magic VPN box in the big boss's home. Though I'd
sacrifice the wireless capability and get a separate access point in
the interest of stability.
Pros and cons of various hardware configurations would be greatly
appreciated. Success stories especially welcomed; it's easy enough to
find someone on the Internet who has had a bad experience with a given
piece of hardware but not so easy to find someone who'll say, "This
worked, and here's how I did it."
