There is a file with that name in the Windows 98 WIN98_30.CAB. there are
a lot of files in that cab that look like they might be part of DirectX.
I didn't see it on my Windows 95 CD. I can't rule out the file being
part of a Windows 95 or Internet Explorer update though.

It's a valid file, part of Internet Explorer (I think). Could be that a
virus has compromised it but having it on your computer is normal. It
should be in the System32 folder.

It is part of Internet Explorer, and has been since about version 3. This
means it is also part of W98 and later. However, whether or not it gets
installed might be dependant on the encryption or authentication options
selected.

Please repost with more information, including the version of Internet
Explorer you are using.

I'm not certain what you mean by 'more information'. The machine in question does not have
Internet Explorer installed. The only browser installed is Netscape v.4.78.

It is my understanding the OSR 2.5 comes with Internet Explorer 4.01. You might
try a fresh copy of "crypt32.dll" from that version. Download
http://msdl.microsoft.com/msdownlo [...] ie4_s4.cab Open the file with WinZip, extract the file, then copy it in DOS to the
Windows\System directory. Please note that this download is a ".cab within
a .cab" which requires two extractions. I also suggest you save a copy of the
existing "crypt32.dll" as a backup.

Many thanks. I don't know why your solution works, but it fixed the problem.
