when I try to run scandisk, it is unable to complete the task due to the
error message "there is not enough free space to run scandisk, please close
some applications and try again" - I have tried everything!! There is
pleanty of free space on the computer and I have tried running it with all
applications closed. How do I fix this?? Also - how do I get it to run
automatically when the computer starts?

Restart the computer in Safe Mode.

Start tapping F8 after the post beeps and before windows loads, this should
bring up a menu where you can start safe mode. Run Scandisk and Defrag from
here.

Alternative:
Restart in 'DOS' and use the command line versions of scandisk and defrag.

Has Scandisk ever worked properly with this drive? Open a DOS Window and

CHKDSK

What is the number of allocation units reported?

Sorry I'm not sure what you mean by 'allocation units'

When you run CHKDSK it will report some information about the partition. One
piece of this information is the number of allocation units. This
information is critical to one possible reason for the Scandisk error, but
if Scandisk used to work OK then this reason seems less likely. What is the
exact message from Scandisk, verbatim?

scandisk /? will give you the settings, probably something like this:

scandisk c:\ /all /autofix /nosummary /nosave

defrag /? will also show the available switches, but you probably won't need
any
